This weekend my list of countries I've traveled to got a new addition: Portugal! Although I was only there for a weekend this time, I'll be back for an ENTIRE WEEK at the end of June/beginning of July. I know it's almost the beginning of June but I don't know if I'll be able to wait to go back because Portugal was just that amazing. As I've done before, I'm going to make a timeline of my fun weekend with the Portuguese below.
FRIDAY, MAY 27TH:
Departed Spain and drove the 5+ hours (including 2 stops) to Portugal! The entire bus screamed and cheered as we crossed into Portugal. We were so loud, I'm pretty sure the entire country thought we'd won the lottery... ten times each.
First of all, Portugal is one hour behind Spain so we gained an hour just from crossing the border. Also, we made it to our hotel in Sintra (outskirts of Lisbon) woohoo! It was dark, cold, and windy outside but we still managed to hang out on the beach and run through the water until we were so cold we had to go inside if we wanted to keep all of our limbs (I just wasn't prepared to lose any of those yet). These pictures are from the following day, when it was light out, to show how great our hotel and the views were.
SATURDAY, MAY 28TH:
After taking a walk on the beach and grabbing breakfast at the hotel, we headed into the heart of Sintra to spend the rest of the morning exploring - my favorite! We visited the Pena Palace and wandered into a few little shops. Views were as follow:
We FINALLY got to Lisbon (where I thought we were spending the entire weekend), which was about a twenty minute drive from our hotel. I had Starbucks for the first time in three weeks and I can safely say that I am more in love with Grande Vanilla Chai Lattes than ever before. Plus, I'm thankful for my friends here for not judging my excitement when we came across the store. I love love loveeeee Lisbon (for more than just the Starbucks, I promise) and absolutely can't wait to have an entire week to expand upon the exploring that I've already done as below:
We headed back to our hotel to watch the Real Madrid vs Atletico game - which was supposedly a big deal, and eat dinner. I definitely had a great time looking at all of the famous/hot soccer players!
It was a little later than 11:59pm but I wanted to include this in my "Saturday" section so I had to adjust the time to fit accordingly. We TRIED to go out in Portugal and ended up a mile away from our hotel, being the ONLY people in the entire "club" dancing (club is in quotes because it was in the back of a pizza store). We left after about 10 minutes, made it back to the hotel, end of night.
SUNDAY, MAY 29TH:
We grabbed breakfast, checked out, loaded our suitcases into the bus and headed back into Lisbon to see Tore de Belem and the Monestario. I definitely enjoyed what we saw, but my favorite part was my Starbucks, again (obviously... plus it was my second one in a weekend so I was a happy girl), and the yummy yellow pastry (still don't know what it was called but I heard it's famous).
I'm now back in Salamanca getting ready to eat dinner with my Madre and roommate.
Obrigada, Portugal, for the fun weekend. I'll see you again soon.
